Skype Call to Spain
Today in Miss Mongey’s class we had a skype call to Spain. It was great fun. We talked about our plans for the summer holidays. The children in Spain told us all about their holiday plans too. We also sang one of our first holy communion songs. Hopefully we will speak to them again before the end of term.
Etwinning News
eTwinning project “Butterflies Across Europe” has been assessed and awarded a Quality Label.
“The breadth of the project involving over 35 schools was very impressive. The chance for children to share and learn about life in other schools and countries is commendable. The butterflies idea was very simple but generated a lot of ideas that could be applied across lots of subjects and could be picked up easily by all the schools who got involved. As well as that, the colour and creativity involved has been a really positive way to introduce cultural understanding to the school. The evidence on the TwinSpace shows how students were very involved and engaged in the project and there is a real sense of interest and enjoyment in learning about European geography, travel, and life.”
Letter received from the eTwinning team at the British Council.
Well done to Miss Watters class for their involvement in this project. It was a huge success.
ETWINNING PROJECT 1
In 2A we are working on an etwinning project with Miss Mongey and Miss Duff. It is a great way to make friends and learn about life in another country.
The project is all about the weather, out town, about us, feasts and festivals in Ireland and lots more. We started our project off by looking at the weather in Ireland, specifically in Drogheda.
WEATHER
Every day we are recording the weather on a chart. We are recording
- wind speed
- wind direction
- temperature
- cloud type
- rainfall
OUR TOWN
We have been telling our Spanish friends all about Drogheda. We went on a walking tour of the town. We had to keep a note of what we saw and drew some pictures. We sent them some more information in the post.
Millmount
The mound at Millmount is reputed to be 3,000 years old and local folklore has it that Amegin, the Celtic poet is buried there. When the Normans came to Ireland in the 12th century, Hugh De Lacy, built a defensive Motte and Bailey here, overlooking the mouth of the Boyne.
In 1649 during Oliver Cromwell’s attack on the town it is believed that much of the slaughter that took place then happened in Millmount, with up to 2,500 men killed on September 11th 1649 . Later the complex served as an army barracks and in 1808 the Martello Tower was built, as a precaution against invasion by the French. The tower was badly damaged during the Irish Civil War in 1922 and was restored to its former glory in 2000.
Laurence’s Gate
The Barbican or outer defence gate located at the junction of Laurence Street and Chord Road is St Laurence Gate .Widely regarded as on of the finest of its type in Europe it dates back to the 12th century. The gate led to the Friary of St Laurence which was located to the East. Part of the old town wall is located to the south of the gate at Featherbed Lane and visitors can see the height and width of the medieval walls.
Twice the walls and gates of Dragged held face against invasion, firstly when Edward Bruce, brother of Scotland’s King Robert Bruce attacked the town in 1317 and again in 1642 when Sir Phelim O’Neill tried to take Drogheda from the garrison commander Tichbourne .
St. Peter’s Church
St. Peter’s R.C. Church in West Street is world famous for housing the shrine of St Oliver Plunkett. The first Church on the site was built in 1791 to a design by Francis Johnston and the present church incorporates part of that building and it was opened in1884. The facade is an imposing structure in the Gothic style, built of local limestone.
St. Oliver Plunkett, was born at Loughcrew near Oldcastle, Co Meath and trained for the priesthood abroad , being ordained in 1654 and becoming Archbishop Of Armagh in 1669. He spent a lot of time in Drogheda and is credited with bringing the Jesuits to town and opening a number of schools .Because of the Penal Laws , Catholics were not allowed practice their religion openly but Plunkett managed to defy them for a period but later he had to go into hiding, travelling only in disguise. . He was arrested in Dublin in 1679 and found guilty of high treason and on 11th July 1681, and having spent some time in Newgate Prison he was taken to Tyburn (now Marble Arch) and hanged, drawn and quartered. He was declared a saint by Pope Paul VI in 1973. His preserved head forms the centerpiece of the shrine in St Peters Church. Many schools, churches and other building in Ireland and overseas are dedicated to the Saint.
Scotch Hall
Scotch Hall, located in the heart of medieval Drogheda, welcomes visitors from around the world. Built as part of an impressive waterfront development which opened in late 2005, the centre boasts over 50 shops and restaurants, a purpose built pedestrian bridge to the town centre and a contemporary four-star hotel “The D” which is located directly next door.
SKYPE:
We did something very exciting this week. We had a skype call with the children in Spain. Five children got to chat to each other on skype. We used the cameras so we got the see the children and their classroom. It was great fun. Miss Mongey and Miss Duff really enjoyed it too.
ST. PATRICK
This week we are learning about St. Patrick. We will send the children in Spain information about St. Patrick. We will also send them some of our art work in the post.
ETWINNING PROJECT 2
23rd March 2011
BUTTERFLIES
In Miss Watter’s class we are getting involved in a new etwinning project. We will be making big butterflies and we will be cutting them out and writing all about ourselves on the back. We will send our butterflies on to some of the schools listed below.
All of these schools are involved in the project.
Finally, a butterfly will leave Scotland in August and will fly (by post) to each partner school. As it travels, it will record its journey on the shared webspace – Twinspace. Each school that receives the butterfly will post photographs of their location and their school on Twinspace.
We will keep you updated on the progress of our project and the butterflies
We have been out looking for butterflies. Some of us have seen beautiful butterflies in our gardens at home too!
